* Ellen Ross teaches at Ramapo College, New York, researching on family life in nineteenth-century Bethnal Green. An active socialist and feminist.
These stages are well documented in the following excellent review essays: Barbara Sicherman, ‘Review Essay: American History,’ Signs 1, no. 2, Winter 1975; Carolyn Lougee, ‘Review Essay: Modern European History,’ Signs 2, no. 3, Spring 1977; Gerda Lerner, ‘Placing Women in History: Definitions and challenges,’ Feminist Studies 3, nos 1/2, Fall 1975; Carroll Smith-Rosenberg, ‘The New Woman and the New History,’ ibid.; Natalie Davis, ‘“Women’s History” in Transition: The European case,’ Feminist Studies 3, nos 3/4, Spring/Summer 1976.
I will be discussing American histories of women, though not all specialise in US history.
Gayle Rubin, ‘The Traffic in Women: Notes on the ‘’political economy” of sex,’ in Toward an Anthropology of Women, ed. by Rayna R. Reiter, London 1975.
Carroll Smith-Rosenberg’s essay is in Signs 1, no. 1, Autumn 1975. Some examples of other studies of ‘women’s culture’ as embodied in female networks are: Nancy Cott, The Bonds of Womanhood, New Haven 1977; Nancy Sahli, ‘Smashing: Women’s Relationships before the fall,’ Chrysalis, no. 8, Summer 1979; Mary P. Ryan, ‘The Power of Women’s Networks,’ Feminist Studies 5, no. 1, Spring 1979; Susan Porter Benson, ‘Business Heads and Sympathizing Hearts: The women of the Providence Employment Society,’ Journal of Social History 12, no. 2, Winter 1978. The connection between feminism and women’s culture is explicitly made in Blanche Hersh, The Slavery of Sex: Feminist abolitionists in America, Urbana 1979.
Two studies of movements in which sexuality was a central theme are: Linda Gordon, Woman’s Body, Woman’s Right. A Social History of Birth Control in America, New York 1976; and Judith Walkowitz, Prostitution in Victorian England: Women, class, and the state, London 1980. The sharpening of sexual identities toward the end of the nineteenth century is analysed in Jeffrey Weeks’ ‘Movements of affirmation: Sexual meanings and homosexual identities,’ Radical History Review, Spring/Summer 1979. The intermingling of issues of class and gender is lucidly explored, in different ways, by Barbara Taylor, ‘Socialism, feminism, and sexual antagonism in the London tailoring trade in the early 1830s’, Feminist Studies 5, no. 1, Spring 1979, and by Leonore Davidoff, ‘Class and gender in Victorian England: The diaries of Arthur J. Munby and Hannah Cullwick,’ ibid.
Stanton is quoted in Cott, op. cit., p. 206. The quotation on the WCTU is from Mary Jo Buhle’s ‘Women’s Culture and Feminism,’ Feminist Studies, forthcoming (1980). In her contribution to a symposium on ‘Women’s Culture and Women’s Networks’ prepared for Feminist Studies (which includes Buhle’s article), Ellen Dubois warns against using women’s culture as a static concept. Though they provided women with strength and satisfaction, these cultures were formed out of women’s political and social weakness; thus it is important to maintain at the centre of our consciousness of women’s past a sense of the importance of organised political groups fighting for social and sexual equality.
